As the Dallas Cowboys near the end of their training camp in Oxnard, they are concentrating on solidifying their backup center position. While the starting offensive line is established, depth remains a concern, particularly after the injury of veteran Matt Hennessy, who has been placed on season-ending injured reserve due to a neck injury.
In light of this development, T.J. Bass has emerged as the primary candidate for the backup center role, despite his limited experience at that position. Bass, recognized as the best backup offensive lineman, has played guard primarily and has started in 10 games over the last three seasons.
The Cowboys acknowledged his potential by offering him a second-round tender this offseason, ensuring a salary of $5.76 million.
During the first preseason game, Bass started at center for two series before being substituted by Nick Leverett, who has more experience at guard but has also played center once in 2024. Following the game, Leverett was seen working extensively as the backup center, indicating that the team is evaluating both players for this critical role.
With Cooper Beebe's past injury issues, having a reliable backup center is essential. The Cowboys will continue to assess Bass and Leverett in the coming weeks as they finalize their offensive line strategy, allowing Bass to potentially return to his preferred guard position.
