The Dallas Cowboys have added Von Miller, a two-time Super Bowl champion and eight-time Pro Bowler, to their roster with a one-year contract, aiming to strengthen their pass rush. Miller, who leads active players in career sacks with 136.5 over 14 seasons, recorded 9.0 sacks last season while with Washington.
However, the signing has drawn criticism from some analysts. Bryan Broaddus, a former scout for the Cowboys and now an analyst at 105.3 The Fan in Dallas, has voiced strong objections, describing the move as low-impact and potentially harmful.
He suggested that Miller's recent performance does not meet the expectations for a starter, arguing that he would likely not have been signed if he were less well-known.
Broaddus highlighted that Miller appears to lack the necessary burst and closing speed expected of a top-tier edge rusher. He indicated that the team might be better served by utilizing James Houston, who is anticipated to be pushed out of the rotation. Pro Football Focus ranked Miller 66th among 119 edge rushers last season, while Houston was placed at 49th.
In response to the criticism, Miller defended his signing by emphasizing his potential impact beyond just playing. During his introductory press conference, he expressed confidence in his ability to contribute on the field and mentor younger players, stating, "If there is a Hall of Fame for that, I am going to the Hall of Fame."
