The Dallas Cowboys have signed veteran linebacker Von Miller, a native of DeSoto, TX, who revealed he had discussions with the team before training camp began. Entering his 15th NFL season, Miller aims to bolster the Cowboys' defense, especially in pass protection, with a remarkable total of 138.5 career sacks, the highest among active players.
Miller's signing introduces competition at the edge rusher position, potentially threatening the roster spots of multiple players. He is expected to primarily play as a left outside linebacker under defensive coordinator Christian Parker during passing scenarios. Currently, Rashan Gary, acquired through a trade this spring, holds the starting left outside linebacker role, while rookie Malachi Lawrence has been training in that position.
On the right side, Donovan Ezeiruaku, a second-year player, is anticipated to fill the role of right outside linebacker, with James Houston likely to be a significant rotational player. This situation creates challenges for Sam Williams and Marist Liufau, who are vying for the same spot and must prove their worth to make the 53-man roster.
Liufau, in particular, could have trade value due to his potential as an inside linebacker with blitzing skills. Additionally, the Cowboys are considering players such as Tyrus Wheat, Isaiah Land, and Adedayo Odeleye, with 17 practice squad slots available for promising candidates. While the immediate effects of Miller's signing are evident for the edge rusher group, further information regarding roster changes remains unclear.
