Van Alstyne, Texas, hosted a Fourth of July parade on Saturday, marking the first such event in the city since 2011. The procession included more than 70 entries moving through downtown streets, accompanied by sirens and displays of American flags. Van Alstyne is located approximately 5 miles north of Anna.
City officials described the event as a significant celebration for America’s 250th birthday. Mike Shaw, the city’s marketing and media manager, stated that local leadership aimed to make the occasion notable. He expressed enthusiasm for the return of the parade, noting that residents had anticipated the event throughout the year.
Kandi Hessel, the city’s events and recreation manager, highlighted the community’s participation. She noted that the large number of entries indicated a competitive spirit and demonstrated that the community continues to unite for local events. Organizers expressed hope that the parade would become an annual tradition rather than a one-time occurrence.
Following the procession, the American Legion Post 376 honored a local resident as the hometown hero. Richard McCabe, the post’s commander, explained that the selection process focuses on identifying veterans who actively work within the community. The criteria prioritize individuals who are both local and engaged in civic service.
The day’s festivities concluded with evening music and fireworks. Shaw remarked that the community intended to celebrate with the same energy as the nation’s founding era. The event took place under a heat advisory that remained in effect until Saturday evening.
