SMU senior Enzo Panozzo has been chosen as the Atlantic Coast Conference's co-defensive player of the week following the Mustangs' 1-0 victory over NC State. The conference announced the honor Tuesday, and Panozzo shares it with Notre Dame's Blake Kelly, according to SMU Athletics.
Panozzo, a Sarasota, Florida, native, led the defense as captain and supplied the lone goal in the victory. NC State managed eight shots, with two reaching the target, as SMU posted its fifth shutout of the season. This is Panozzo's first ACC weekly award and the second conference weekly honor earned by SMU this season.
The result moved the Mustangs to No. 3 in the United Soccer Coaches poll. SMU has a 7-0-1 overall record, including a 2-0-0 mark in ACC competition. The team is scheduled to return to conference play Sunday against Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.
