Prosecutors plan to examine police body-camera footage and a 911 call as University of Houston football player Carmello Brooks faces two criminal cases. Brooks appeared in court Monday on an allegation involving the assault of a pregnant person and a separate criminal mischief charge.
Nariah Harley, the woman connected to the assault case, asked the judge to dismiss all charges. She said an argument happened inside Brooks’ apartment last week and that Brooks repeatedly told her to leave. After she refused, she said, he lifted her and placed her outside.
Harley said Brooks called police because she would not leave, and she told the court he is the father of her baby and that she does not consider herself a victim.
Brooks’ attorney, Brent Wasserstein, said officers’ body cameras recorded the encounter and that prosecutors would review the footage and Brooks’ 911 call. The second case stems from an August dispute in northwest Harris County involving another woman and her sister. Brooks is accused of damaging a door handle.
Family members said Brooks, those women and Harley grew up in Killeen, while Harley attends Texas Southern University. Wasserstein said Brooks remains suspended from the football team while the cases are pending and hopes he can attend classes. No further details were provided.
