Spurlock's Malt Shop in Anna is scheduled to close its doors in November after the landlord sold the building located on Highway 5. The announcement, made by the restaurant on social media earlier this month, has prompted a significant response from local patrons who are expressing concern over the loss of the establishment.
Kristi Spurlock Perez, the restaurant owner, stated that while the family anticipated the property might eventually be sold, the timing of the transaction was unexpected. The Spurlock family, which previously operated a drive-in in Lamesa for six decades, assumed control of the Anna location in 2012. Perez noted that the family's goal upon taking over was to preserve the business and restore its vitality.
The drive-in has been a fixture in Anna since the 1950s, known for its neon signage and classic menu items. Following the news of the impending closure, customers have begun lining up at the shop.
Kirby Wilbur, a frequent diner who often visits for burgers and onion rings, expressed a desire for the new property owners to consider preserving the local landmark rather than replacing it. Wilbur described the location as having a distinct history and character that he wishes to see maintained.
