Alvarez Delivers the Final Blow
Yordan Alvarez provided the decisive blow in the ninth inning, hitting a two-run home run to center field that extended the Houston Astros' lead and secured a 10-8 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. The blast, measuring 424 feet, capped a productive offensive night for Alvarez, who also contributed a single in the fifth inning and a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
The Astros (44-47) finished with 10 runs against the Rays (52-34), who scored eight. The game, played at Daikin Park in Houston before 37,457 fans, featured six home runs in total. Alvarez’s ninth-inning homer was the final one of the contest, capping a rally that saw Houston overcome an early deficit.
Early Runs Set the Tone
Tampa Bay jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Wander Franco’s teammate, one of the Rays' key hitters, homered to left center. However, Houston responded immediately in the same inning. Alvarez launched a two-run shot to left center, putting the Astros ahead 2-1. The Rays regained the lead in the second inning when one of their batters homered to right center, making it 3-2.
Houston tied the game in the third inning. A sacrifice fly by one of their players brought in a runner, followed by a single that scored another. A stolen home plate added a third run in the frame, giving Houston a 5-2 advantage. The Astros extended their lead to 6-2 later in the inning when a runner stole home.
