A recent study from Southern Methodist University suggests that fully autonomous vehicles could decrease traffic delays across the Dallas-Fort Worth area by as much as 33 percent, without the need for new highway lanes. This finding is particularly relevant for residents of Anna, Texas, located approximately 45 miles northeast of Dallas, as it highlights potential changes in commuting patterns.
The research, led by Khaled Abdelghany from SMU's Stephanie and Hunter Hunt Institute for Engineering and Humanity, involved traffic modeling supported by the Texas A&M Transportation Institute and funding from the region's council of governments.
The study conducted 25 experiments simulating traffic in 2045, with scenarios of 100 percent, 50 percent, and 25 percent adoption of autonomous vehicles compared to a baseline with no autonomous vehicles. In the scenario with full adoption, traffic delays were reduced by up to 33 percent, and time spent in congested traffic decreased by at least 19 percent.
The mechanism behind these improvements is linked to the driving behavior of human operators. Human drivers often create traffic jams due to inconsistent braking and spacing, which autonomous vehicles could alleviate through smoother, more coordinated driving, according to Abdelghany.
Currently, Texas is at the forefront of developing the autonomous vehicle industry, particularly in freight transportation. Aurora Innovation launched commercial driverless deliveries between Dallas and Houston in April 2025, marking the first such service in the United States. These trucks operate along the I-45 corridor, which is vital as nearly half of all truck freight in Texas travels this route.
Aurora has also expanded its operations to include a route from Fort Worth to El Paso and plans to deploy hundreds of trucks.
Other companies, including Kodiak Robotics, Waymo Via, Gatik, Plus, and Waabi, are also advancing autonomous trucking in Texas, establishing the state as a central hub for this sector.
On the passenger side, Waymo has been running a paid robotaxi service in Austin and has expanded its service to select riders in Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio, aiming for broader availability by the end of the year.
The transition to autonomous vehicles raises questions about job impacts. While some roles may change, new opportunities will arise in areas like vehicle maintenance, remote monitoring, and logistics. Industry estimates suggest that autonomous vehicles could contribute approximately $70 billion to the U.S. GDP and create around 9 million jobs globally by 2030.
