Anna police officers have a new reason to stop young riders around town, and it comes with dessert.

The City of Anna and the Anna Police Department announced Tuesday a safety and education campaign called Helmet Up, Anna! The first phase targets riders age 16 and younger on bicycles, e-bikes, scooters, electric scooters and skateboards, and asks families to talk through safe riding before kids head out.

Under the program, officers who see a young rider following good habits may hand over a voucher for a free scoop of ice cream from a participating business, according to the police department's program page. The city did not name the participating partners in its announcement.

What officers will be looking for

The department's checklist covers the basics:

  • A properly fitted helmet on every ride
  • Front and rear lights after dark or in poor visibility, plus bright or reflective clothing when it helps
  • Obeying traffic laws and signals, riding in the correct direction and using bike facilities where they exist
  • Hand signals, and keeping phones put away while riding

The 2-V-1 fit check

The program also promotes a quick test for whether a helmet fits. The helmet should sit roughly two finger-widths above the eyebrows, the straps should form a snug "V" beneath each ear, and only one finger should fit between the chin and the buckle.

The city describes the campaign as an initial effort focused on young riders. More information is posted on the Anna Police Department's Helmet Up, Anna! page, and the department can be reached at 972-924-2848.
