Collin County is set to give Meals on Wheels Collin County $39,662 for home-delivered meals next year, a grant that also opens the door to state money for the program.
Commissioners will consider a resolution supporting the nonprofit's application to the Texas Department of Agriculture's Texans Feeding Texans: Home-Delivered Meal Grant Program at their regular meeting Monday, Oct. 12. It is listed among the consent items, which commissioners typically pass together.
According to the county budget office's memo, the money would cover Feb. 1, 2027, through Jan. 31, 2028. The amount is unchanged from last year's agreement and is already budgeted in the county's general fund for fiscal 2027.
Why the county vote comes first
The state program is built to piggyback on local support. To qualify, a meal provider must receive a grant from the county where it delivers meals, documented with a signed county resolution, according to the agriculture department.
A county grant equal to 25 cents for each county senior counted in the most recent census qualifies a provider for the program's funds, and smaller county grants mean smaller state grants.
The agriculture department says the money is meant to supplement and extend providers' existing home-delivered meal programs. Applicants must have delivered meals to homebound people 60 or older, or to people with disabilities, in the previous state fiscal year.
