The Houston Texans have declared that they will cease contract negotiations with quarterback C.J. Stroud once the regular season kicks off. General manager Nick Caserio indicated that if a deal is not finalized prior to the team's first game against Buffalo on September 13, discussions will be postponed until the following offseason.
Stroud, the second overall pick in the 2023 draft, has had his fifth-year option activated, ensuring his contract remains valid through 2027. Although Caserio had previously suggested that an extension might be possible before the season, no agreement has been reached as of now.
At 24 years old, Stroud holds a record of 28-18 and has guided the Texans to playoff appearances in his initial three seasons. He was recognized as the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2023 and recorded a career-high completion percentage of 64% in 2025, contributing to a 12-5 season and a spot in the divisional playoffs.
Nevertheless, Stroud encountered difficulties during the postseason, notably throwing five interceptions in a 28-16 defeat against New England. Further information regarding potential future negotiations has not been revealed.
