TCU Athletics has reinstated media credentials for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, concluding a dispute that began after the newspaper reported on a locker room incident involving the dismissal of safety Jacob Fields. The university announced the restoration of access in a statement on September 4, highlighting that constructive discussions led to the resolution of differences between the two parties.
The conflict arose from a report by Star-Telegram reporter Steven Johnson, published on August 18, which detailed tensions in the locker room and claimed that coaches failed to address the situation. The report indicated that head coach Sonny Dykes was not aware of the extent of the issues among players.
Following the article's release, TCU officials revoked the newspaper's credentials, citing alleged threats against sophomore receiver Dozie Ezukanma, who was involved in the incident.
The altercation occurred on August 13, with Ezukanma alleging in a social media video that Fields punched him, resulting in a head injury. A TCU staffer reported the incident to campus police, leading to Fields’ dismissal from the team and subsequent criminal charges. Fields turned himself in to authorities on August 30, facing charges of aggravated assault and was released after posting bail.
During the credential suspension, Johnson covered TCU's season opener from the stands in Dublin, Ireland.
