Southern Methodist University (SMU) head volleyball coach Sam Erger has been suspended for two games following an impermissible communication, as confirmed by a university spokesperson. This self-imposed suspension by SMU Athletics occurred on August 29 and 30.
During Erger's absence, the Mustangs secured victories against Colorado State and UC Davis. The team won the match against Colorado State in four sets and triumphed over UC Davis in five sets. Notably, sophomore outside hitter Suli Davis achieved her first double-double in the match against Colorado State, recording 22 kills and 14 digs.
Erger resumed her coaching duties on September 2 during a match against TCU, where the Mustangs lost in a closely contested five-set match. In that match, Davis again led the team with 15 kills, while freshman Bojana Ambulija contributed 13 kills in her debut.
Erger has been at the helm of the SMU volleyball program since February 2022, leading the team to three NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Sweet Sixteen finish in 2025. Last season, the Mustangs tied the program record with 27 wins. The team is scheduled to play against the University of San Diego next, with the match available for streaming on ESPN+.
