BJ Edwards, who previously played for the SMU Mustangs, has decided to join the Oklahoma Sooners. This commitment was reported by Joe Tipton of On3. Edwards will have an extra year of eligibility due to a five-for-five temporary injunction that allows additional eligibility for the 2022 recruiting class.
Edwards transferred to SMU after a brief stint at the University of Tennessee, where he played only 14 games. During his three seasons at SMU, he contributed significantly under two different head coaches, Rob Lanier and Andy Enfield.
Last season was particularly notable for Edwards, as he participated in 28 games, averaging 12.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game, all while facing injury challenges. His defensive skills earned him All-Conference defensive team honors in the ACC, with averages of 2.4 steals per game in the 2024-2025 season and 2.3 steals per game in the 2025-2026 season.
Despite interest from SMU to keep him on the roster, Edwards opted to play for head coach Porter Moser in Norman. The Sooners are aiming to enhance their team after finishing last season with a 21-16 record and a 7-11 record in SEC play, missing out on the NCAA Tournament.
Edwards's addition is seen as a key improvement for the team's prospects in the upcoming winter season.
