Dozie Ezukanma, a wide receiver for TCU, was hospitalized for three days due to serious injuries, including a brain bleed and a concussion, after an alleged assault by teammate Jacob Fields. The incident took place on August 13 at the Walsh Athletic Complex.
According to an arrest warrant affidavit, Fields allegedly punched Ezukanma in the head while he was seated and looking at his phone, and then kicked him in the back of the head, causing Ezukanma to lose consciousness. Following the incident, Ezukanma reported severe headaches and ringing in his ears, which led to his hospitalization.
Initial scans confirmed a brain bleed, necessitating his transfer to the ICU. He was discharged on August 16, having also sustained a strained AC joint in his shoulder.
Jacob Fields was dismissed from the team on August 18 and has been charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. He turned himself in to authorities and was released on a $50,000 bond. Fields later expressed remorse in a text message to TCU police, stating he made an emotional decision and offered to cover Ezukanma's hospital expenses.
TCU head coach Sonny Dykes commented on the incident, emphasizing that it was out of character for both Fields and the team. Ezukanma, a graduate of Keller Timber Creek High School in Fort Worth, was anticipated to be a starting wide receiver for the season, with TCU's next game set against Grambling on September 12.
