The competition for the backup quarterback role behind Dak Prescott is intensifying, with Sam Howell and Joe Milton both demonstrating their abilities during the preseason.
Sources indicate that Howell, who has started 18 of his 20 NFL games, could be released in favor of Milton, who has reportedly excelled in recent preseason performances. Analyst Ben Grimaldi from USA Today mentioned that while Howell had an early lead, Milton's strong showings have altered the competition's landscape.
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer noted that Howell was slightly ahead in the race but acknowledged Milton's significant improvements. "If you would just take the training camp competition, it's probably neck and neck, and Sam maybe a little bit ahead," Schottenheimer stated, while also recognizing Milton's impressive outings.
The Cowboys face a decision on whether to retain two or three quarterbacks on their 53-man roster, which complicates matters as keeping three may require cuts at other positions. Howell's fully guaranteed contract of $2.5 million for the year means the team would incur that cost even if he is released.
As training camp concludes, the Cowboys will finalize their decision, potentially influenced by their preseason finale against the New Orleans Saints.
