The Dallas Cowboys are adjusting their offseason strategy as they prepare for their upcoming game against the New York Giants. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer announced that Pro Bowl left guard Tyler Smith will be out for at least four weeks due to thumb surgery, with T.J. Bass stepping in as his replacement. Schottenheimer expressed confidence in Bass's capabilities.
In light of these developments, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones suggested that the team may pursue a trade to strengthen their defense. During his radio show, Jones mentioned that recent contract restructures have created substantial cap space, allowing the team to explore potential acquisitions. He stated, "We're in play" regarding trades, with an emphasis on improving the defensive lineup.
Last week, the Cowboys restructured contracts for several players, including defensive tackle Kenny Clark and cornerback DaRon Bland, resulting in $19 million in additional salary-cap space. These changes are seen as financial maneuvers that enhance future flexibility without altering current player salaries.
Jones noted that the timing of these adjustments could pave the way for a trade before the mid-season deadline. He also indicated that the Cowboys' cap space could exceed $33 million by the 2026 season, providing opportunities for player acquisitions. Potential targets include Las Vegas Raiders star Maxx Crosby and Miami Dolphins linebacker Jordyn Brooks.
Jones remarked that he might consider trading high draft picks to acquire a player who could significantly contribute to the team immediately.
