The Dallas Cowboys are facing a setback as left guard Tyler Smith will be unavailable for a minimum of four weeks due to surgery for a torn ligament in his left thumb. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer stated that Smith, who has struggled with this injury during training camp, will be placed on injured reserve designated to return. His recovery might take up to six weeks.
Smith, who was drafted 24th overall in 2022, has played 63 regular-season games and received recognition as a second-team All-Pro in 2023. Despite efforts to manage the injury while playing, he ultimately chose surgery when it began to hinder his performance. Schottenheimer remarked on the situation, noting the challenges Smith faced.
In his absence, T.J. Bass, a 27-year-old undrafted free agent with 48 game appearances and 10 starts, will take over as the starting left guard. The Cowboys previously secured Bass with a second-round restricted free agent tender, showcasing their belief in his capabilities.
Additionally, the team has made a roster adjustment by signing tight end James Mitchell to their practice squad. Mitchell, who has played for the Detroit Lions and Carolina Panthers, takes the place of veteran tight end Mitch Van Vooren, who was waived after rejoining the Cowboys.
