The Dallas Cowboys have made significant roster adjustments, particularly in the running back area, resulting in the release of Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah, both drafted in 2025. The team has decided to retain Javonte Williams, Malik Davis, and Hunter Luepke. Coach Brian Schottenheimer acknowledged the tough decisions involved, recognizing the potential that both Blue and Mafah had shown.

To enhance their roster, the Cowboys have acquired running back Emari Demercado off waivers from Kansas City. Schottenheimer pointed out Demercado's versatility, especially his contributions on special teams, as a crucial aspect of this acquisition. Additionally, offensive coordinator Klayton Adams's familiarity with Demercado from their time in Arizona influenced the move.
Schottenheimer was uncertain about the potential return of Blue or Mafah to the practice squad, indicating that no guarantees were made for either player. The Cowboys have added 13 players to their practice squad, including Israel Abanikanda, while also holding an exemption for one more player due to the International Player Pathway program, which features defensive tackle Dayo Odeleye.
Schottenheimer expressed confidence in the current running back lineup and reiterated the team's commitment to building a competitive roster.
