A defense lawyer for Jacob Fields, a former TCU football player facing aggravated assault charges, alleges that the coaching staff was aware of increasing tensions leading up to a locker room fight on August 13. Fields is accused of injuring teammate Dozie Ezukanma, who required three days of hospitalization due to a brain bleed.
Attorney Coby DuBose contests details from the arrest warrant affidavit, which states that Fields struck Ezukanma unexpectedly. DuBose argues that Fields approached Ezukanma to greet him before the incident escalated. He claims that Fields had informed the coaching staff multiple times about his frustrations with rough treatment during practices, emphasizing that Fields expressed he was fed up with being subjected to unfair hits.
DuBose contends that the TCU coaching staff did not take the escalating situation seriously and could have acted to avert the conflict. He described the events leading to the fight as exceeding typical football roughness, citing instances of spitting and illegal hits. Fields’ agent, Phillip “Red” Miller, echoed these concerns, noting the presence of unnecessary aggression during practices.
In contrast, a source from the TCU football program refuted DuBose's claims, while athletic director Mike Buddie asserted that the coaching staff handled the situation appropriately. The investigation into the incident continues, and further information regarding the coaching staff's actions remains unclear.
