Gillespie scores 25 in loss

Ja'Kobi Gillespie scored 25 points, but the Utah Jazz defeated the San Antonio Spurs 119-109 in a preseason game Monday at Delta Center in Salt Lake City. Utah was the home team. Darryn Peterson had 14 points and five assists for the Jazz, while Mo Bamba collected nine rebounds.

The Spurs received six assists from Jordan McLaughlin and 17 rebounds from Tarris Reed Jr. San Antonio remained within reach after a high-scoring opening half, but Utah’s third-quarter surge created separation.

Jazz build cushion

Utah led 33-26 after the first quarter, with Jaxson Hayes scoring nine points in the opening period and Keyonte George adding points on a running dunk and a 12-foot pullup jumper. San Antonio answered with a 35-point second quarter, but the Jazz also scored 35 and held a 68-61 advantage at halftime.

Utah then outscored San Antonio 31-17 in the third quarter. Darryn Peterson opened the period with two baskets, and his 23-foot running jump shot later made it 80-64. Utah led 99-78 entering the fourth quarter.

Spurs rally late

Utah extended its lead to 107-82 early in the fourth quarter on Brice Sensabaugh’s 26-foot 3-pointer. Gillespie then provided a late burst for the Spurs, making three consecutive 3-pointers to bring San Antonio from 90-112 to 99-112. He later added a driving layup, but the Jazz maintained the lead.

The Spurs scored 31 points in the fourth quarter to Utah’s 20. Harrison Ingram’s 4-foot running pullup jump shot put the Jazz ahead 119-107 before Gillespie’s final driving layup set the final margin.
