McKinney National Airport has initiated its first commercial airline operations, marking a significant shift in the facility's history. Avelo Airlines is the carrier providing this inaugural service, which offers travelers an alternative to driving to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport or Dallas Love Field. The new routes connect North Texas residents to popular vacation spots, including Las Vegas, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Orlando, and Tampa.
This development follows announcements made earlier this year when Avelo identified McKinney National Airport as its first operating base in North Texas. The airport is simultaneously advancing a $79 million passenger terminal project. This construction aims to provide modern amenities, expanded security screening, and additional parking to support future airline growth.
City officials have long viewed commercial passenger service as a catalyst for economic development. They believe the new flights will attract businesses, support tourism, and provide convenience for residents in Collin County, one of the fastest-growing counties in the nation. To build community engagement, airport officials hosted a Display Day event earlier this year, allowing residents to view aircraft and learn about the airport's future before the first passenger flights departed.
Airport leadership sees the current five-destination schedule as a foundation for expansion. As the new terminal nears completion and passenger demand rises, officials plan to pursue additional airline partnerships and expanded route offerings. The goal is to strengthen the airport's role as a transportation hub for the region.
