McKinney City Council members are scheduled to receive an update on proposed infrastructure improvements along State Highway 5 during a work session on July 7. The presentation will outline plans for reconstructing and widening the highway into a divided four-lane road between McMakin Street and Power House Street.

According to city documents, design work for the project is currently underway. The Texas Department of Transportation is expected to begin construction in late 2027 or early 2028. As part of the broader effort, the city is contributing funds for additional enhancements along the corridor. These additions include median-mounted roadway lighting, turn lanes, and an enhanced at-grade crossing located between East Virginia Street and East Louisiana Street.

The push for these specific enhancements follows a decision by city officials to redirect resources after the loss of $15 million in federal funding for the Lower 5 Plaza project. That earlier proposal had planned for a ground-level bridge and a park extending underneath the highway. During a meeting in September 2025, council members voted on a resolution to shift focus toward additional improvements along the corridor.

City staff will present the current plans to the council to receive direction as they continue to coordinate with the Texas Department of Transportation and the North Central Texas Council of Governments. The goal is to incorporate the identified improvements into the ongoing coordination efforts.

The work session is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. on July 7 at McKinney City Hall, located at 401 E. Virginia St. The meetings will be livestreamed for residents who are unable to attend in person. Further details regarding the specific scope of the at-grade crossing and other corridor enhancements are not yet clear beyond the general descriptions provided in city documents.

McKinney is about 11 miles south of Anna.
