A Texas city will allow its voters to decide in November on the future of Flock Safety's automated license plate reader cameras. The City Council voted unanimously to place the question on the ballot, marking a significant moment as it is believed to be one of the first instances in Texas where such a program is presented to voters.
The ballot proposition will ask whether the city should keep utilizing Flock's automated license plate readers, with 55 active cameras currently in operation and 16 more pending permits from the Texas Department of Transportation. Although the referendum is non-binding, the City Council retains the authority to make final decisions regarding the program.
Mayor Nick Long, who proposed the referendum, presented arguments both for and against the cameras. He noted their effectiveness in solving serious crimes, including murders, while also acknowledging significant privacy concerns related to data access. The push for the referendum follows reported misuse of the cameras in nearby areas, which has intensified the privacy debate.
In addition to the referendum, the city plans to implement an online transparency portal to show how the cameras are used and establish a citizens accountability committee for oversight. The outcome of this vote will be closely monitored, as it may reflect broader sentiments regarding similar systems in other Texas cities.
