Early Strike Sets Tone
The Portland Timbers established control early in their home contest against the visiting Houston Dynamo FC on Sunday. David da Costa opened the scoring in the 25th minute, providing the first tangible evidence of Portland’s offensive pressure at Providence Park. The goal gave the home side a 1-0 advantage that they would ultimately maintain throughout the second half.
Timbers Extend Lead Before Halftime Interval Approaches
Portland doubled their lead before the match reached its midpoint. Kristoffer Velde found the back of the net in the 65th minute, extending the Timbers' margin to two goals. This strike effectively sealed the outcome for Portland, as Houston struggled to generate consistent attacking momentum against a disciplined defensive line.
Late Response Falls Short
Houston attempted to mount a comeback shortly after Portland’s second goal. Agustín Bouzat scored for the Dynamo FC in the 71st minute, narrowing the deficit to 2-1 and injecting a brief period of uncertainty into the final quarter of play. However, Portland responded decisively just seven minutes later.
Vincent Janssen added the third goal for the Timbers in the 78th minute, restoring the two-goal cushion and effectively ending any realistic hope of a Houston rally.
