Critical Late-Inning Relief
Steven Okert preserved the victory for the Houston Astros by securing his fifth win of the season against the Texas Rangers. The Astros edged their division rivals 5-4 at Daikin Park on Saturday, August 1, 2026, with an attendance of 38,461.
Okert entered the game in the eighth inning and pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. He allowed one hit and struck out two batters while issuing no walks. His performance kept the Rangers off the scoreboard after they had taken a 5-3 lead earlier in the contest.
Bryan Abreu secured the save opportunity by working around trouble in the ninth, pitching a perfect frame with one strikeout. Josh Hader closed out the game in the top of the ninth, also throwing a scoreless inning with one hit allowed and one strikeout to record his 15th save of the season.
Scoring Sequence Unfolds
The Rangers struck first in the second inning when Wade Jr. singled to right field, allowing Altuve to score and putting Smith in scoring position. The game remained tied at 1-1 until the third inning when Langford hit a home run to left field, tying the contest.
Houston quickly took control in the bottom of the third. Trammell singled to left, driving in Alvarez and Walker to give the Astros a 3-1 lead. The Rangers responded immediately in the fourth inning. Osuna singled to right to score Carter, followed by a sacrifice bunt from Díaz that brought Duran home, tying the game at 3-3.
Walker reached on an infield single to first, and Peña scored to put Texas ahead 4-3. Alvarez then scored on a wild pitch by Winn, extending the Rangers' lead to 5-3. The Rangers challenged the call, but the umpires upheld the decision.
Despite the early deficit, the Astros rallied in the bottom of the sixth when Díaz homered to right field (343 feet), cutting the deficit to 5-4.
