Scammers may impersonate legitimate charities or use names that closely resemble well-known organizations. To ensure safe giving, the Attorney General's office recommends several steps: researching unfamiliar charities through watchdog resources like CharityWatch and GuideStar, verifying that organizations are properly registered, and being wary of names that are nearly identical to reputable charities.

Additionally, individuals should avoid wiring money to unknown entities and refrain from sharing sensitive information, such as bank account or Social Security numbers, with unsolicited callers.

Texans who suspect they have encountered a scam or experienced price gouging can report it by calling the consumer complaint line at 800-621-0508 or by submitting a complaint through the Attorney General's website.
