Rantanen Leads Stars' Dominant Second Period

Mikko Rantanen had a goal and three assists on Thursday as the Dallas Stars beat the Buffalo Sabres 4-0 at KeyBank Center, where 19,070 fans watched. Jake Oettinger made 26 saves for his second consecutive shutout.

Scoring Breakdown

The Stars took the lead in the first period and pulled away in the middle frame. Jason Robertson opened the scoring with a snap shot, assisted by Rantanen and Wyatt Johnston. The second period proved decisive, as Dallas added three more goals.

Sam Steel scored on a snap shot, with assists from Thomas Harley and Rantanen. Rantanen then beat Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen with a backhand, assisted by Nils Lundkvist and Johnston. Roope Hintz closed out the scoring with a power-play snap shot, set up by Johnston and Rantanen.

Dallas scored once in the first period, three times in the second and not at all in the third.

Rantanen led all skaters with four points. Johnston recorded three assists, on the first, third and fourth goals. Four different Stars scored.

Oettinger stopped all 26 shots he faced, while Luukkonen made 14 saves on 18 shots for Buffalo. Dallas went 1 for 2 on the power play and won 62.3% of faceoffs.

Team Records

The win was the Stars' second in a row after two season-opening losses and leaves them 2-2-0 with four points. The Sabres are also 2-2-0 with four points.
