The rapid expansion of data centers in North Texas is creating a significant demand for electricians and HVAC technicians. This surge is linked to the increasing need for infrastructure to support artificial intelligence technologies. In Texas, 248 data centers are planned, with 86 located in North Texas, making it a central hub for this growth.

The state's grid operator, ERCOT, has indicated that data centers are responsible for most of the new electricity demand. Proposed projects could require hundreds of gigawatts of capacity, potentially raising statewide demand to 368 gigawatts by 2032. Each facility requires skilled workers for installation and maintenance, but there is a shortage of qualified electricians and HVAC specialists.

The Texas Workforce Commission anticipates a need for nearly 3,000 additional electricians in the Dallas, Tarrant, and North Central workforce regions by 2032. This represents a 15% increase over staffing levels projected for 2026. In the Dallas area alone, there are expected to be about 1,035 electrician openings annually, primarily due to retirements and workforce turnover. The national labor shortfall for data-center construction could be as high as 499,000 workers, leading to increased wages for these positions.

As the industry faces a labor gap, young North Texans may find opportunities in trade programs and apprenticeships, which allow them to earn while they learn, making electrical and HVAC careers increasingly attractive.

Dallas is about 42 miles south of Anna.
